General Are you the same organization as Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)? We shortened our name from Environmental Defense Fund because "Fund" was a source of confusion and we arent actually a fund. We've also adopted a new logo, the "e" from our name, as a symbol of the Earth and of recurring themes in our work environment, economy, equity, empowerment. If you have included Environmental Defense Fund or EDF in any legal document, it will not be affected by our name change. We do suggest, however, that when your attorney makes any changes to the document, include the following information: "Environmental Defense, a not-for-profit membership organization incorporated by the laws of the State of New York, having as its principal address 257 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010." Can Environmental Defense provide grants or funding for my environmental project? Environmental Defense is a not-for-profit environmental advocacy organization that relies on contributions from members and foundations. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to give grants or other financial assistance to worthy causes such as yours. We do occasionally offer mini-grants for environmental science research projects. To see past rules and grant awards, please visit http://www.environmentaldefense.org/sciencegrants/minigrant.html A good resource for funding information is The Foundation Center in New York City. It provides information on foundations and corporations that support a variety of causes. The address is:
For organizations seeking funding in Europe, the European Foundation Centre at http://www.efc.be has created the Funders Directory at http://www.fundersonline.org, a growing source of information. The Foundation Center
Site/Editorial How can I get permission to reprint your material? On the Web: We welcome requests to feature Environmental Defense articles on your Web site. You may use Environmental Defense articles if you include our name in your list of on-line environmental resources or provide a link to the Environmental Defense Web site. In print: Environmental Defense grants permission to reprint newsletter articles or Web site materials for educational or nonprofit purposes provided you follow these guidelines: To request permission to reprint, please e-mail [email protected]; call member services at 1-800-684-3322; or write Environmental Defense Public Information at 1875 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20009.

© 2000 Environmental Defense; reprinted by permission. How do I obtain permission to use a photo I found on your site? Many of the photos on our Web site were obtained with exclusive one-time rights and may not be used by anyone else without prior permission. The rights to others are owned by Environmental Defense and available for use. Expert Help A good place to start is with our introductory page at http://www.environmentaldefense.org/programs/index.html. Here, you can find more about our history, our current programs, our mission and our staff. That way, when you prepare your interview questions, youll know what we do and what we are able to answer. When your interview questions are ready, you can e-mail them to [email protected] or call us at 1-800-684-3322. Our lawyers, ecologists and economists are not always available to answer your questions, but our public information staff can tell you more about our efforts and help you find more information on specific topics. Although we do have lawyers working on all of our program issues, in most cases we arent equipped to take on legal battles for individuals or local nonprofits. However, there are other organizations that offer pro-bono legal help. You might try Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund at http://www.earthjustice.org/, Southern Environmental Law Center at http://www.selcga.org/ or Western Environmental Law Center at http://www.welc.org/. In addition, a number of law schools have established legal clinics that focus on environmental issues in their area. Law students, supervised by faculty, offer assistance to community groups. For further information, contact the law schools in your area.
Environmental Information There is a spill, leak or other environmental emergency in my neighborhood. Whom should I contact? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) handles these situations and has national numbers to call for chemical and oil spills at http://www.epa.gov/epahome/emerg2.htm To report environmental violations, go to http://www.epa.gov/epahome/violations.htm and obtain the phone numbers for the regional offices to contact. I would like to get my water tested for contaminants. Who can do this for me? Some local health departments test private water for free. Phone numbers for your local, county or state health department are available under the "health" or "government" listings in your phone book. The EPA also lists state certified laboratories at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/sco.html
Unfortunately, Environmental Defense is unable to take on the many cases
that are brought to our attention by concerned and active citizens.
We do share the strategies weve used in documents such as the Environmental
Sustainability kit, available at:
Another good resource is: Where are the local recycling facilities in my area? You can call 1-800-cleanup or visit the Web site at http://www.1800cleanup.org to locate recycling facilities by zip code. I would like to start a recycling program at work. What do I need to know?
Though Environmental Defense often works with industry leaders to reduce
waste and find other environmental solutions, we arent able to work
with every business. However, we have written down some of our "lessons
learned" to help others reproduce our results, You can view that
document at http://www.edfpewalliance.org/kaplan.html.
The EPA also offers guidelines on recycling programs for corporations: Here are some basic guidelines for reducing waste in your office:
Most communities have Recycling Coordinators government officials who have information on specific local recycling resources. Look in your phone book under Recycling Coordinators or contact the relevant city, county or state government office (often called Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Natural Resources or Department of Sanitation). Environmental Defense participated in the Paper Task Force, which has published an extensive report on paper performance, solid waste management, forest management, type of paper manufacturing and suggestions on reduction of paper usage. http://www.environmentaldefense.org/pubs/Reports/ptf/index.html
Membership Services How do I become a member, and what are the benefits? You can join Environmental Defense by donating on-line at http://testbed.ext.g-nyc.edf.org/membership/partner/join.cfm or by calling or mailing the information listed on that site. As a member of Environmental Defense, you are entitled to a bi-monthly newsletter, regular updates on our projects and special members-only offers and discounts on our products and publications. Where can I find current financial information about Environmental Defense?
Our most current financial information is available in our most recent
annual report: I want to volunteer my time. How can I become more involved?
Job opportunities and internships for our 8 offices are regularly
updated on our Web site: No matter where you live, the best way to join us as a volunteer
and to make a real difference in our work is to become an e-mail activist
with our Action Network. We will keep you informed about action pending
on issues you care about most. You can help merely by sending an e-mail
to the most influential decision-makers on a particular issue. Well
e-mail you background information, along with a pre-drafted letter you
can edit as you wish and send with just a click of your mouse. We
have made this important technology available to all environmental
groups so you can sign up for all or any of hundreds of different
groups by going to: Is there a credit card that supports Environmental Defense? Citibank offers a MasterCard that supports Environmental Defense every time you make a purchase. For every new activated card, Environmental Defense receives $5, plus royalties of less than 1% on net transactions. You can apply by calling 1-877-726-5649.
Banners/Advertising Id like to link to your site. Where can I get a banner? Go to http://www.environmentaldenfense.org/links/media_ads/. I ran across another group's banner that was linked to your site isn't that false advertising? Unfortunately, banners are sometimes mislinked to Environmental Defense, misleading you to believe we are offering certain gifts or content on our site. We can usually contact the Webmaster of the referring site and ask them to correct this link if you can tell us more about the site that displayed the banner and what the banner offered. Because we allow people to download our banner, and because we largely rely on donated Web space, we arent always aware of where our banner is displayed. Our banner displayed on a Web page in no way implies that we support or endorse the group or cause sponsering the site. | ||
